Maybe I was spoiled by the taste of the Shiner 98 but I was a little disappointed by the light lager flavor of the 99. I think I understand the history of this anniversary brew, and I don’t want to take away from that, but the head didn’t last and neither did the taste. It poured a nice copper color and has a pleasant aroma. A very good looking beer. If I hadn’t had the “98″ I would probably like it more. The “pro’s” would say “It had a quick finish”. I, on the other hand, enjoy a beer that doesn’t leave a heavy aftertaste. This beer would be good for a family picnic or a golf outing. One you can drink three or four of and not feel like you just ate a six course meal. My rating: “C”. I can’t wait for the 100th anniversary brew.

Of all the beers to come out of the Spoetzl Brewery, this one is my favorite. Upon pouring it into my mug, I smelled the sweet aroma of the malts. The head was a little light as far as bock beers go, but it lasted through my fourth or fifth drink. It had a very pleasant taste. The flavor lasted long enough to get me to the next drink and it didn’t leave a heavy, filmy aftertaste. I would rate this beer a “C+” on the “P-O-R-C-H” scale. There is a local tavern here in my home town that keeps it on tap and it will be my beer of choice when I go there. This is a beer that would go great with a steak or BBQ ribs.

I picked up a couple of the Goose Island 312 brews earlier in the week, in a summer variety pack. Tonight, it was a night cap. The color was light, and cloudy and was the perfect flavor for the mood I was in. I was tired and about ready for bed. I fired up a Victor Sinclair and although the cigar had many issues, the beer was great.
As I try more and more Goose Island blends, I am beginning to think that I enjoy the Goose Island better than Samuel Adams. That is not a statement to be taken lightly! I have a few more varieties to try from the pack I bought, and I’m excited to report my findings.

I’ve never tried this brew, and I generally like Sam Adams beers so I thought I’d give it a go. I poured it in my glass, just like I have been doing quite religiously lately and found the dark color attractive, and the head was frothy, sticking to the sides of my glass.
After my first drink, I had sudden taste bud confusion. I knew I was drinking beer, but tasted like I was drinking beef jerky. The beer had a hickory/smoked flavor. It didn’t taste altogether bad and am glad I tried it, but I doubt I’ll be buying any more of these.

I may have stumbled upon the perfect Porch match. Yesterday was a pretty stressful day at the mill. So I decided to hit the Porch with the first cigar I grabbed out of my humidor and the first bottle I took from my beer fridge. I did kind of a “cover your eyes and point” method to arm myself for the next couple of hours of relaxation. The humidor coughed up a 5 Vegas Classic red label and the all too trusty beer fridge pointed me to a Leinenkugel Big Butt Dopplebock. Man, what a pair! The beer was smooth and the flavor lasted until the next drink. I didn’t realize it until recently, but I am slowly becoming a big fan of the bock beers and this one is one of the best yet. As for the cigar, I haven’t had a 5 Vegas that I didn’t like. Medium to full flavor, lots of thick white smoke and not too harsh on the nose. It had an even burn all the way down and lasted about an hour and a half. I hope to repeat this combo over and over again. Maybe next time it will be at a golf course or a campground.

Tonight I fired up the grill, preparing to cook shish kabobs when I decided to pour a Goose Island Honker’s Ale. This beer had only been in the refrigerator for an hour, so it wasn’t really cold yet when I drank it. The color was several shades darker than the India Pale Ale I had the other night, and it was not as hoppy. I could taste the malts more, though I couldn’t pick out the flavors. After I finished drinking it, I treated myself to another to drink with my dinner.
This is the second Goose Island brew I’ve tried, and have not been disappointed. I would recommend this beer to anyone.
