First things first. I would like to thank my buddies John and Jim for their generous contributions to our site, by seeing to it that Sam and I were able to try this very unique brew.
They say that drinking scotch will enhance the experience of a good cigar. Well last night I smoked one of the best cigars ever, (check out Sam’s review of the Arturo Fuente Anejo) and, well, this beer was a perfect subsitute for whiskey. And an almost perfect beer for this occasion.
It poured a crisp amber with a creamy white head that lasted about 2/3 of the way down. At first the taste was a little offensive. Too much bourbon and not enough beer. But it got better with each drink. By the time I was done with it, I was ready for another. The first drink tasted just like whiskey, the second drink tasted like whiskey that isn’t too strong. The third drink, I could finally taste the “beer”. The fourth drink….well, I think you get the picture. In short, it was almost like having a scotch in a beer mug.
Every drink of this fine brew was a joy, and each drink, or should I say “sip”, got better. Not a typical beer, and one that will last you awhile. In the time it took me to finish it, I could have had two or three normal beers. Not because it was bad, but because it took control of your taste buds and demanded that you let the flavor soak in before you took the next drink. Whatever the circustances, the taste of this bourb…er.. .beer will dominate the moment and the conversation. It is that different.
This is what I would consider a good sipping beer. Not really one for the hot summer months. I’m not quite sure what all the flavors were, but there was the bourbon, the cold feel of a beer, some malts and at one point I could swear that I tasted a hint of Twizzlers. Weird huh?
This is by far the most unique beer I’ve ever tasted and it wasn’t bad. I don’t think this is something I’d keep in my fridge every day but come this winter, I will definitely try it again. This beer’s perfect place in time includes a cold night, a nice fire in the fireplace, your favorite cigar and a good book.
