Fred’s American Ale

freds-american-aleMy Dad was the son of German immigrants and a WWII vet. He, and his parents, believed in America and the American way of life. Religious freedom, political freedom, family, friends and the right to celebrate your heritage. So it is only fitting that one of his son’s, Fred, takes pride in brewing an American ale.

He gets his ingredients from a company in Cincinnati, a huge German settlement, called Listermanns. We were at our Mom’s house  for our monthly “Card Night” (we go to mom’s once a month to play pitch) when Fred showed up with a couple of bottles of his home brew. Fred’s American Ale.

It had a nice amber color to it, a little cloudy like a wheat beer,  but because he just finished brewing it that day it didn’t have much of a  head to it. It had an aroma of strawberries and raspberries. At first I thought it was going to be another fruity “fad” beer but I know Fred, he wouldn’t shove a fruity beer at us. Not on card night. He would get his man card punched and would never live it down. It had a very smooth feel on the palate, you could almost feel the weight of it on your tongue. You could taste just enough hops to know you were drinking an American ale, but went down very smooth. It left only a slight aftertaste, just enough to make you want to take another drink. Needless to say the two bottles he brought didn’t last long. This is a good quality beer made with good quality products by a patient old dude. Heck, even our mom liked it!

Food recommendations: Cook out foods like burgers, dogs, bratts. I would even recommend it with BBQ chicken or ribs. Also good with snack foods like summer sausage and cheese and crackers. Can’t wait to taste his next batch.
