Dos Equis XX Amber

Dos Equis Dark 1I found this one at a Mexican restaraunt on tap. I’m not much for Mexican beers, mainly because it usually takes a piece of fruit to give them any flavor, but “when in Rome” (or in this case “El Rancho Grande”).

They placed it in front of me with, yes, a  lime on the rim. A LIME ! On MY beer! I quickly removed it and gave a quick glance around to make sure nobody seen a beer in front of me with fruit in it. I think I got away with it. It had a nice looking clear amber color to it with a decent off white head. I raised it to my nose to get a whiff but got nothing, so I tried again, and again. Still nothing. I gave it one last BIG sniff and as I did, I noticed the waitress looking at me like I was nuts. Our eyes locked for a long awkward moment and she began to smile almost to the point of laughter so I put it down and tried to explain myself but the more I talked the more she seemed to be amused and I quickly realized that there was no explaination in the world that I could come up with to make her understand so I finally just smiled and she walked away rolling her eyes.  Oh well, she’ll have a good story to tell her family when she gets home. Anyway, the taste was ok, nothing to write home about. I tasted no hops, and no malts. ItDos Equis Dark 2 was a  fairly smooth, cold brew that went well with the free chips and salsa, but not worth the three bucks I paid for it. It reminded me a lot of Michelob’s Ultra Amber. It did have some nice lacing though, as the picture shows, until the very end.

If it weren’t for the free chips and salsa, which by the way was very good, and the politeness of the waitress for waiting until I couldn’t see her to laugh at me, (nobody likes to be laughed at to their face) this would have been a bit of a disappointment. Not a beer you’ll find in “ol’ yella” (that’s what I call my beer fridge) but if you want to impress your friends by making them believe that you can “stomache” the darker beer, without actually drinking a “dark” beer, this one could be for you. Looks good, tastes boring.

P-O-R-C-H Rating: O-

Note: The beer on it’s own would have ranked an “O”, but the fact that it tastes better with a lime in it, I added the minus.
