Shiner 100 Commemorator

Shiner 100A couple of years ago, we at beerandcigars.net formed a small gentlemans alliance with the good folks at Spoetzel brewery in Shiner Texas. They agreed to brew good beers and we agreed to drink them. I must admit, I’ve fallen a little short on that deal this past year, what with so many beers to drink and so little time (nice cliche, huh?) I’ve somehow let this one pass me by, till my friend “Marty” informed me that it was available at the newest beer cave in town. (Thanks ”Marty” I owe you one.) The masters at Spoetzel, however, have held up to their promise on their end though, and we are the beneficiaries of their dedication to the brewing craft.

Every year for the past five years they have  brewed a special recipe to celebrate their anniversary’s leading up to their 100th as a brewer of fine beers. This year was truly special indeed. They celebrate their 100th year as a brewer of some of America’s best beers. To commemorate their centenial, they chose to craft a Dopplebock in the tradition of the old style’s of beer that the Monk’s used to make. Because of it’s nature, a dopplebock, it is a pretty heavy feeling and sweet tasting brew.  It has a nice malty/bready aroma and beautiful mahogany color with a long lasting tan head. It goes down very smoothly and has a surprisingly clean finish. This finish is probably due to the hops. In my opinion, some brewers add too many, or the wrong kind of  hops that mask the full flavor of  a malty brew like a bock or dopplebock. The guys at Spoetzel seem to have perfected this mix and came up with a winner. A full flavored dopplebock with an ale aftertaste. I really didn’t think they would ever top their signature brew, Shiner Bock, but they did. Too bad it’s only available for a limited time. Get yours soon before I get it.

It’s almost like they knew I am partial to ales so they added a bit of an ale aftertaste just for me. Hmmmm…..at least that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. Food pairing? Well, if you ask me, I would say this beer is almost a meal unto itself, but if I was forced to eat something with it I would recommend something special like a leg of lamb or a crown roast and seasoned potatoes and stir fried fresh green beans.
