Great Lakes Oktoberfest

Ahhh…..my favorite time of the year. High school football has begun, the college hockey season is just a few short weeks away and I’m beginning to find Oktoberfest beers on the shelves again. This years first appearance is by the Great Lakes brewery. I’ve had their fine fall brew in the past and it is one of my favorites. Let me tell you about it.

First of all, the very sight of it reminds me that autumn is near and the full flavor of some of the best brews are about to appear. Classic Great Lakes label with a festive celebration scene. It poured a nice clear amber with a fairly thick creamy head that lasted about a third of the way down. You can smell the sweetness of the malts with each drink. It has a medium to full flavor, a bit on the sweet side, with a nice clean finish that begs you to open another. You can really taste their signature malt profile, but that is a good thing with this beer. It would go well with a nice autumn meal like stuffed pork chops and apple sauce or beef roast cooked in the crock pot.

Great Lakes has never disappointed me, and their Oktoberfest is another winner. I don’t think they make a bad beer.

Burning River Pale Ale

Another by the Great Lakes Brewing Co, Burning River is a Pale Ale that’s named after the infamous 1969 burning of the Cuyahoga River. Interesting in name, I’m not thrilled with the beer. As I try more Great Lakes beer, I am noticing a signature flavor with these beers. The beer isn’t too hoppy, and I can taste uniqueness in the malts that I just can’t describe. This beer tastes like a toned down version of Eliot Ness Amber Lager.

I don’t have a rating scale, but if I had one this would score the middle of the board. I am excited about moving on to my next round of beer reviews.

Eliot Ness Amber Lager

Eliot Ness Amber LagerThis lager is brewed by the Great Lakes Brewing Company. As I was pouring the beer, I noticed there wasn’t all that much of a head developing but it was a light brown color. The color of the brew was a dark amber and when I finally took a drink I thought my whole face puckered. The malts and hops come together and BAM! there it is.

The taste stays with you for a while as well. This might be one of those special occasion beers, or one you drink with big spaghetti dinner, I don’t know. I’m not sure I like this beer, but I have five more to drink. I might just give them to Mr. Porch and see what he thinks about them.
