I found this one on sale at my favorite beer gettin’ place, Jungle Jim’s, 3 six packs for $10. So, first things first. I don’t drink a lot of foreign bier (bier? I thought it was spelled “Beer”), I personally like to stick to the American craft brewers, so I’m going to appologize in advance about this review, it may be waaayyyy off, and because it’s from Switzerland, and I’m not, I will be nice to our Swiss friends, and for the sake of this review, I will refer to it as “Bier”.
Named for the Appenzell region in the northeaster part of Switzerland, this bier pours a typical light lager or pilsner color yellow. It has a slight skunky aroma which is even more noticeable in the aftertaste. A decent white foamy head with no lacing. It has a sweet corn or grassy taste to it, almost like a Heineken that had been opened and left in the fridge all night. (You know, the kind of beer you drink with cold pizza for breakfast.) Not much going on in the hop department, really kind of a boring beer. Not much flavor, except for the corn palate and road kill aftertaste. I’ve had worse, but for $3.33 a six pack, I could drink this one all night. But probably only for one night.
This would be a decent beer, oops, I mean “bier” to have while sitting around the campfire telling your favorite ghost stories and eating peanuts. This is the first Swiss bier I’ve ever had so I really have nothing in it’s class to compare it to. I’d summarize by saying it has a decent grassy flavor, skunky aftertaste and an overall boring brew. If you decide to give this one a try, here’s a little tip: Believe it or not, it tastes better if you drink it straight from the bottle than if you pour it in a mug or glass. Weird, I know, but try it both ways and I think you’ll agree.
