Leinenkugel 1888 Bock

leinenkugel-1888-bock-1The last few weeks of February and the first couple of weeks of March can mean only three things. March madness, girl scout cookies and the annual release of Bock beers. I’m going to admit right away that bock’s are not my beer of choice but I do get them this time of year because it reminds me that spring is just around the corner.

Leinenkugel’s 1888 Bock is laden with malts and you can smell and taste the toasted and caramel malts right away. It has a full body with a nice dark brown color but a fairly thin head for a bock. The first one went down like most bock’s do, with a thick feel on the palate but that doesn’t last.  The flavor after each drink seemed to disappear quickly. While drinking my third one of the leinenkugel-1888-bock-2evening I began to think that this is a pretty boring beer. Like I said, I’m not much for bock beers so this one is ok for my taste but if you really like the rich maltiness of  a good hearty springtime bock, you might want to try a different one. But if you are new to this type of brew, it would be a good gateway bock for you.

This one isn’t bad, but probably not one I’ll keep on hand.  If you happen to be blessed with a warm, early March day and want to knock the ice off the grill and fire it up after a long winter of crockpot meals, I would suggest this beer with a grill full of brats and metts. And don’t forget the grilled onions and hot mustard.
