Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest

Classic Oktoberfest look. Deep amber in color, almost brown, with a fairly thick head that clings to the glass for about 1/3 of the way down. It had very little aroma, uncommon for an Oktoberfest/Marzen. A real good looking beer but I thought it tasted a little watery (thin finish?). I wasn’t real impressed, so I only drank three on this night and left the other three for the next evening. But after finishing the six pack the next night, my opinion didn’t chage. It’s not a bad beer but I’ve had better Oktoberfest brews.

Leinenkugel Oktoberfest/Marzen

This is one of the better Oktoberfest beers in my opinion. After I poured it into a frosted mug, I know this is not what you do with an Oktoberfest but all my mugs were in the freezer, I noticed it had very little head. It was not until the beer was about half gone that I could see the true color through the frosty-ness of the mug. So I waited to take my notes until I could pour a second one. This time around it was much better. It had a nice clear amber color, with just a little head that didn’t last long. It smelled like a typical Oktoberfest/Marzen, lots of malts. It had a somewhat sweet taste and caramel feel on the palate. A decent finish, with a small amount of linger time from the hops.

I will get this one again and would recommend it. I love fall and all it brings, especially the Oktoberfest brews.

Erdinger Oktoberfest

I found this beer by sheer accident. I went to the local convenient store to pick up some snacks for the coming evening, and checking out the beer section (as I always do) I noticed one I’ve never seen before, and it was from Germany.  So I had to get it. Now armed with a new beer and a bag of pretzels, I headed for the porch.

The package looked festive enough so it couldn’t be too bad. The bottles were as colorful as any beer bottle I’ve ever seen, I was excited about trying this one, so I got my mug and my note pad and poured away. The first thing I noticed was the color, very cloudy and almost a peach color. You could really tell this was a wheat brew. The head was a little off white and thick. So far, so good. The aroma was somewhat mild for an Oktoberfest. Next was the long anticipated taste. This is where I started to get a little disappointed. It was very creamy and had almost no aftertaste. Just another mild wheat beer that bores the palate with a lack of hops.

I don’t like giving bad reviews, but to be honest, this beer looks better than it tastes. It may be a good autumn beer for someone who doesn’t like the stronger flavor of the typical Oktoberfest beers. It packs a healthy 5.7 ABV but for $9.49 a six pack they can keep it in Germany.

Paulaner Oktoberfest

I hate to see the summer almost over but I love autumn! Oktoberfest beers are my favorite. I picked this one up at the local “quicky mart” the other day and set aside a whole evening just for this beer. I’ve tried a lot of Oktoberfest beers but not this one until now.

First, the pour, a clear dark copper color with a slightly off white head. It had a nice thick aroma that made me think that I was in for a good Oktoberfest. This is one good looking and good smelling beer. All Oktoberfest beers have some spicy flavors, but this one was very spicy. I would describe it as “zesty” AND “spicy”. Very good. It had a somewhat dry finish but the slight aftertaste stayed with me a little while but not too long. So, not only does it look and smell good, most importantly, it tasted good.

If you like Oktoberfest beers, then this ones for you. If you don’t, then I wouldn’t waste your time buying it. I wil definately get this one again but not until I’ve tried the rest of them.

Great Lakes Oktoberfest

Ahhh…..my favorite time of the year. High school football has begun, the college hockey season is just a few short weeks away and I’m beginning to find Oktoberfest beers on the shelves again. This years first appearance is by the Great Lakes brewery. I’ve had their fine fall brew in the past and it is one of my favorites. Let me tell you about it.

First of all, the very sight of it reminds me that autumn is near and the full flavor of some of the best brews are about to appear. Classic Great Lakes label with a festive celebration scene. It poured a nice clear amber with a fairly thick creamy head that lasted about a third of the way down. You can smell the sweetness of the malts with each drink. It has a medium to full flavor, a bit on the sweet side, with a nice clean finish that begs you to open another. You can really taste their signature malt profile, but that is a good thing with this beer. It would go well with a nice autumn meal like stuffed pork chops and apple sauce or beef roast cooked in the crock pot.

Great Lakes has never disappointed me, and their Oktoberfest is another winner. I don’t think they make a bad beer.
