Michelob Porter

Michelob PorterMy neighbor, “Dr. Rob” invited me to his cave again the other night. His wonderful wife “The Rose of Brooklyn”  made a trip to the store and stocked his beer fridge full of all different kinds of brews. Ales, Reds, Lagers, Porters etc. (What a great lady) Being the cold winter night that it was and my love of  the heavier brews during this time of year, it was an easy choice for me. I picked the Michelob Porter.

Now before I start, I have to warn you that I’m not very partial to the mega brewers out there that are trying to cash in on the craft brew market. But as I’ve stated in the past, I will try them and be as honest as I can in my opinion of the beer and leave my opinion of the brewer out of it. So, here goes.

It poured and good looking root beer color with just a hint of red. A nice light caramel colored head that dissipated pretty fast for the most part but left a thin film of suds laying on top the whole way down. So far so good. It had an inviting aroma to it also, like a weak cup of coffee with a squirt of vanilla in it. The flavor was decent, a bit thin for a porter, but at least you won’t have to put a piece of fruit in it to get any flavor from it like that Mexican crap. You could taste some roasted malts but not enough to leave much of an aftertaste. A decent smooth and mellow body, but, again, too thin for a Porter but not bad. The finish was clear and a little boring. (Although, it did leave me wanting another) Overall this is not a bad offering by a volume brewer. If you’ve never tried a Porter but always wanted to, I would strongly suggest that you try this one first. But be careful, it may lead you down the path of better beers.

Food pairing: This would be a good desert beer. The next time you have a birthday party, try offering the Michelob Porter to the adults with their cake. Also good with browies and chocolate.
