Today was a cold and rainy spring day and my family had a taste for some of my famous BBQ pork chops. A window of sunshine presented itself about 4:30 and I went for it. I fired up the grill and worked my magic to produce my pork chops of perfection. When they were done, I headed to Ol’ Yella (my beer fridge) and picked out one from Summit’s winter variety pack. An ESB.
Of all the Summit beers I’ve tried, this one has got to be the worst. Decent looking head with a deep amber color. This looks like a pretty good beer, but don’t, as they say, judge a book by it’s cover. The taste is one I’ll try to forget, it had a thick syrupy feel on my tongue and was anything but bitter. It was more like a hop flavored sugar water than a bitter. This beer was a perfect mixture of sweet and bitter, with a big fat splash of thick yuckiness.
ESB stands for “Extra Special Bitter”. I like bitters. But the only thing bitter about this beer was the look on my face as I choked down each drink. It wasn’t too bad to give up on, I did finish it with my awesome pork chops but it won’t happen again. I was very disappointed, this is the first time I’ve tried a beer from Summit and didn’t like it.
