My neighbor, “Dr. Rob”, invited me over last night to meet his brother “Eric” who lives out west somewhere and fights forest fires for a living (now that’s manly as heck!). After cordial introductions we headed to his man cave to enjoy a beer or two. He opened up his man-fridge and there were five or six selections. I picked the Bud Light Golden Wheat.
Now, before I get started, let me say that I’m not a real fan of much that comes from the two mega brewers here in the USA, but I wll give them a try. Especially when someone else buys them. It was a guy kind of night, bragging, swapping lies, saying good things about our wives and drinking straight from the bottle. It had a pretty light aroma, a lot like it’s big brother Bud Light. Iwas surprised by the thicker mouthfeel that it had, more than I expected from a volume brew. At first I thought it tasted a little salty but that soon went away and it settled down into a decent wheat beer flavor, light but decent. It had a nice clean aftertaste. As far as wheat beers go, it was pretty thin, but I’m not really a wheat beer kind of guy. After my second one it didn’t seem to be much different from other all night beers like Bud Light. Not a bad beer, but not something I would drink with regularity.
If you ask me, I would say that this is another weak attempt by the Big Guy (AB) to capture sales in an arena where he don’t belong. My advice to the corporate stuffed shirts: Stay home! Sell your product and let the craft brewers do their thing. This one is brewed and marketed. Nothing else. It’s a bottom line kind of thing for them. If you want a wheat beer brewed with care, love and concern for the beer drinker (that’s us), stick to the craft brewers.
A little side note: Every man fridge should have no less than two selections, fruited beers and wine coolers don’t count. “Dr. Rob” far exceeds his requirements on maintaining a properly stocked man fridge. Good job buddy, way to handle that man card.
